Frolic & Joy: Celebrate Beltane with the Daisy Chains

Frolic & Joy: Celebrate Beltane with the Daisy Chains

6 minute read

As nature bursts into life and the sun warms the earth, we step into Beltane  - the first fire  festival of the year.

Celebrated on May 1st, Beltane marks the transition from spring to summer, and for me this festival is all about creativity, beauty, and abundance.

It’s a time to embrace the beauty of nature bursting through with all its sweet smelling blooms and the sensual energy that comes with the warmth of the sun.

This year, I’m celebrating Beltane with the launch of my Daisy Collection—a jewellery line that captures the playfulness of childhood. Inspired by the humble Lawn Daisy (Bellis perennis) and the carefree moments of childhood, this collection is all about embracing the sensuality and joy that comes from living in the moment and appreciating life’s simplest pleasures.

For me daisies, with their cheerful sun-facing petals, symbolise a simpler time. Historically, they have been known as bruisewort and woundwort, as they’ve been thought to heal bruises. Daisies are also edible with a subtle nutty flavour and would make adorable natural cake decorations. To find out more about the medicinal qualities of daisies have a read of ‘forage londons’ blog here

The idea for this collection came to me last year as I was making daisy chains with my niece. This brought back memories of the simple pleasures of being a child—I’d spend hours in the grass threading daisies together to make crowns, singing songs, and feeling the grass under foot. It wasn’t about anything other than the joy of the moment—of creating, of being in nature, and helping me ground when the world felt too overwhelming.

This year, Beltane feels like a reminder to reconnect with that simple joy—the act of frolicking, of creating for no other reason than it brings happiness, of being playful and free. It’s a time to embrace the sensuality and vitality of life, and go give our inner child a little joyful break.

The Daisy Collection

The Daisy Collection embodies the spirit of Beltane—celebrating the pleasure from the everyday glimmers in the grass. From the playful Daisy Chain Bracelet to the bold Big Daisy Necklace, these memories of carefree joy are woven into each piece:

The Daisies come in two varieties; bold white acrylic or delicate hand painted wood. The pink-tipped petals on the wooden flowers were an essential detail of the magic and romance I’ve always associated with these flowers as I’d always try and find the pink tipped daisies for my crown.

There are 10 different pieces in this collection so there will surely be a piece to suit your needs. Here's just a selection…

Daisy Chain Bracelet:  A playful design that evokes the first jewellery I made for myself.

Big Daisy Necklace: A simple yet elegant piece, perfect for a vintage flower child look.

Dainty Daisy Drop Earrings: A cute & subtle pop of joy for your outfit.

Daisy Hairgrips: Pretty and practical, these hairgrips will keep the hair away from your sunscreen and let you wear daisies in your hair for longer than just a day.

Embracing Beltane: Tapping Into Nature’s Magic

Beltane is all about celebrating life, embracing the wild energy of nature, and honouring the sensual side of life.

In the weeks leading up to Beltane, I’ve been embracing the creativity and abundance of the season. I’ve spent time in the greenspace surrounding my flat, planting seeds and getting my hands in the dirt—something that always makes me feel more connected to nature. Did you know that passing soil between your fingers can boost your serotonin levels? Thanks to beneficial soil microbes like Mycobacterium vaccae which have been shown to improve mood

I also recently stumbled upon an amazing podcast called Oologies (a must for your next special interest!) The foraging episode with Alexis Nicole from @blackforager was enlightening and perfectly timed!  I’m fairly new to eating things that aren’t from the supermarket, but it’s been so empowering to explore the edible wild plants around me as well as munching on some (very well washed) daisies too.

Some of the things I’ve tried recently...

  • Cleaver Tonic: Remember throwing these sticky weeds at everyone as a kid? Well, they make a refreshing tonic that helps with lymphatic drainage.

  • Garlic Mustard: I found a recipe that transformed this weed into something delicious and full of flavour—tastier than spinach, and packed with nutrients!

  • Lilac Cordial: I’m so excited to try this when it’s finished infusing! The scent of lilacs brings back all kinds of memories, and it’s an easy recipe to make with kids. Try the recipe HERE

I’m also keeping an eye on my wild strawberries, which are flowering now. Their flavour is so unique, and I can’t wait to taste them when they ripen—just gotta keep my pesky strawberry thief away!

Beltane is all about celebrating life, embracing the wild energy of nature, and honouring the sensual side of life. It’s a festival that invites us to step into our creativity, connect with others, and embrace the fertility and abundance of the season. For Beltane, I’ve booked the day off to spend in nature, soaking in all the joy and magic of the season. I’ll be making fresh flower crowns with friends, gathering for a feast with my community, and maybe even enjoying a bonfire under the stars. There’s something so special about being with nature and celebrating life’s simplest pleasures.
