Winter Solstice
A Time to Rest, Reflect, and Rekindle the Light
Although I’m writing this on Monday, 23rd December, the Winter Solstice was on Saturday, marking the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Luckily, solstice celebrations traditionally stretch from December 20th to 25th, so I’m still very much embracing the spirit of the season. This sacred turning point in the Wheel of the Year reminds us that, even in the darkest moments, the light will always return. It’s a time to pause, reflect, and embrace the stillness of winter—a season where nature teaches us the value of slowing down and conserving energy.
This feels especially important for me, as winter is often my busiest time of year. Taking the time to rest and recharge, even in small ways, has been crucial for maintaining balance.
A Slog to the Solstice…
This year has been particularly challenging, and reaching the solstice has felt no different. Like many small businesses, I’ve been navigating the financial pressures caused by everyone's reduced disposable income during the cost-of-living crisis. These challenges have made pushing forward harder than usual, but they’ve also encouraged me to take a step back—just as nature does in winter.
The solstice reminds me to hibernate a little and focus on what truly matters: resting, recharging, and finding ways to make my business work better for me next year. I already have some exciting plans in store, so watch this space! 🌿✨
Solstice Celebrations
This year, I spent Saturday crafting wreaths and making bath salts with my five-year-old niece. We ventured outside briefly to see our shadows stretch to their longest, but with both of us nursing colds and feeling the exhaustion of the end of school and work, we spent most of the day indoors. Wrapped in blankets, we lit candles, sang carols, and created a little bubble of warmth and joy. It felt like a scene out of Little Women (my favourite Christmas film)—a cosy reminder that even the simplest rituals can create cherished memories.
Honouring the Spirit of the season
The Winter Solstice isn’t just about marking the longest night—it’s about finding light in the darkness. Whether it’s through candlelight, connecting with loved ones, or reflecting on the past year, this season invites us to slow down and find comfort in small, meaningful rituals.
It’s also a time to reflect on challenges and growth, planting the seeds of hope and intention for brighter days to come.
